More than textbook knowledge is needed for a child to thrive as an adult. They thrive thanks to lessons beyond the curriculum that foster leadership, confidence, curiosity, resilience, and emotional intelligence.

When I read the inspiring stories in this issue of five select educators in Tallahassee, it brought me back to my own journey as a student. Although I could thank countless teachers, coaches, and mentors for the lifelong lessons they instilled in me, one stands out.

In my high school—like many high schools— we had classes that counted for college credit. One of those classes I took was a marketing class. The professor, Deb Gross, was also the faculty member of DECA, a high school marketing and entrepreneurship organization dedicated to developing the next generation of business and civic leaders. Deb (as we all called her) made all the students in her program feel inspired and creative. Her unique approach, which almost felt like a club, gained our trust and respect, as well as an increased demand for her program. She was a marketing genius, after all.

Even her choice to be called by her first name created a different dynamic for the students. She talked to us like adults, held us accountable, andprovided us constant opportunities. She saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself at the time.

She selected me to compete in the DECA competition because she said I had not only a unique and creative eye but an ability to take a concept and create desire and demand. I was shocked to win first place in the state for my event and advance to the national competition. This experience is what led me to explore a degree in marketing from Florida State

University, and as they say, the rest is history. I want to thank Deb Gross. She made an impact not only on me but also thousands of other students at Alta High School. She took the time to learn about each of us—not just our skills and ability in school but also our lives. She understood the challenges each of us faced at home in friendships, in relationships, and in our extracurricular activities and gave us guidance on it all. She created a space that made us feel safe and heard.

Thank you to every leader in our community who understands the impact and responsibility they have for the next generation. The waves you create will inspire beyond our city limits, leading to global impact. May this issue inspire you to continue the journey if you are currently one of those leaders. Make an extra effort to support one, or start today to become that person.
