Four-Legged Friends and Forever Homes

There were treats for both quadrupeds and bi-pedal types at the 12th annual Pets & Their People canineaganza, if we might call it that — and why not? Furry friends frolicked and made new acquaintances as their owners sipped on brunch cocktails, perused the offerings of pet-friendly vendors and listened to local musicians. Eleven lovable dogs found their forever homes at this tail-wagging good time. 

The event took place at presenting sponsor Proctor Subaru’s dealership on Saturday, March 19. The Leon County Humane Society brought dogs of various breeds and even a few kittens for attendees to play with, walk and possibly welcome into the family. 

All pets — newly adopted or long established family members — were invited to participate in the pet photo shoot. Owners and pets alike smiled for the cameras for a chance to be featured in Tallahassee Magazine and received a free downloadable photo as a “furever" keepsake. 

Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s prepared by Madison Social were available and nicely complemented the delectable brunch provided by Sonny’s BBQ. For those who were still waking up, Lucky Goat Coffee was available and The Cake Shop offered sweet treats as afternoon pick-me-ups. 

Pet-loving vendors set up their booths where they supplied information and product samples. Veterinary clinics and pet services taking part included Banfield Pet Hospital, Mahan Animal Clinic, Be The Solution, Petagon International Inc., Mojo’s Backyard and Capital Vet Specialists. Vendors providing treats were Chuy’s Tex-Mex Restaurant and Nuberri Frozen Yogurt. And in case walking the dog isn’t enough for your health, the Pure Barre fitness studio was on site. Face painters from BJ’s Party House provided fun for the kiddos. Aloft Tallahassee Downtown let everyone know they’re pet friendly and invited all to visit their bar and hang out poolside with their canines.

Barks were mixed with the country tunes of Dallas Bowlin, the smooth jazz of Jacob’s Ladder and the unique, reggae tones of Tyler Denning. ABC 27 and Live in Tallahassee interviewed attendees and captured shots of pets.

Throughout the day, the special and indescribable bonds that only pets can provide were on display. 

On May 27, a check was presented to the Leon County Humane Society for $332, as proceeds from the brunch and bar tickets, along with funds collected by Chuy's Tex Mex Restaurant went towards the donation. Seven vivacious pups joined their humans, including Leon County Humane Society's executive director, Lisa Glunt and Shelby Westberry and Tallahassee Magazine's Leigha Inman, McKenzie Lohbeck and Mackenzie Ligas.
