Social Graces
Why practice etiquette in 2026?

Etiquette helps bind the fabric of our society. While social graces have always been a part of the modern world, sometimes they can be confused with stringent rules. It is not some exclusive club where only a few are invited; it is a democracy where everyone can join and benefit. Its purpose is to make people comfortable in every setting.
What’s more, manners and etiquette are often confused, but each have distinct definitions. Etiquette denotes the protocol we adhere to, while manners occur when we interpret these rules in everyday interactions.
Practicing etiquette can improve your life and the lives of those who surround you by showing respect toward them. The more respect you give, the more you will receive in return. And of course, you will stand out in social and professional settings as someone who is both proper and pleasant company.
While handwritten notes, standing up before shaking hands, and keeping elbows off the table are still relevant rules of etiquette, advances in technology have given us more to consider. Following contemporary etiquette protocol will put you in good stead in today’s fast-paced world and are worth incorporating into your New Year’s resolutions for 2026.
For instance, one of the modern rules of etiquette suggests removing your headphones or earbuds when approached by another person. In-person communication is somewhat of a rarity these days, and giving someone your full attention is the best way to express your desire for a meaningful conversation. During a gathering, removing all personal items— including phones—from the table has also emerged as a necessity. Paying attention to the volume of your speaking voice while on your phone in public settings is another great practice. Be cognizant of others and their auditory space, and take your conversation outdoors
if needed.
Nowadays, individualism has overcome people’s consideration of others, but with a few changes, we can reclaim the intimate space we share with those we respect. Modern etiquette suggests we rethink how we inhabit shared settings and use our spatial awareness to demonstrate
social mindfulness.
This year, I look forward to continuing to guide you in a new etiquette journey.
