The first thing you might think when seeing an advertisement for something free is, of course, what’s the catch? According to the founders of The People’s Pancakes, Nick and Scott Bell, there isn’t one. This is the framework of giving they are building with their free breakfast movement, serving hot pancakes across Tallahassee’s urban center.

While the two brothers’ idea has been on the brain for 12 years, it took time for their lives to stabilize, assemble their team of volunteers, coordinate ideas for expenses and procedures, and perfect the ultimate pancake recipe. Finally, Nick and Scott put their plan into action in November of 2025.

Scott fabricated their iconic pancake recipe through trial and error, resulting in delicious pancakes that are entirely vegan. “Our grandmother taught him [the recipe], and he’s edited it over the years,” Nick says. “They’re incredible. They’re probably the only pancakes I’ll eat.”

On top of unlimited pancakes, fresh fruit and coffee are up for grabs. And just like the flapjacks on the griddle, the line can feel limitless. No matter who you are or where you come from, this breakfast was cooked for you to enjoy.

“The food is just a reason to get people there,” says Nick. “It’s a community thing. To give people community, specifically in [places and times] where there isn’t a lot of community stuff going on, is nice.”

A community is nothing without companionship. Nick and Scott’s ultimate goal is to set a table where people from all ways of life can sit together—this is why they only offer long, family-style seating.

“We all just woke up one day and were alive and none of us had a choice about it. We’re all just trying to figure it out. I think when you realize that, change happens,” says Nick.

“I don’t want anyone to feel like they don’t belong. I don’t want anyone to feel like they need to do anything. I don’t want anyone to feel like there’s any separation. We are just people.”

Unfortunately, this brand of unwavering kindness is not always easy to find. Convincing people that these pancakes are genuinely free—with no sign-up sheet, no questions asked—has been a challenge. However, this is an obstacle worth overcoming.

“We’ve got the absolute best stuff—not the most expensive but the best ingredients. We’re as environmentally sustainable as possible and ask for nothing. We don’t want email addresses. I don’t want you to follow us on Instagram. I don’t want you to check out our website. We don’t have merchandise to sell. We just want to give away free pancakes,” urges Nick.

Cultivating the feeling of home requires structure and planning, and Nick and Scott are drawing the blueprint for their future as a movement. Soon, they hope to hold their events on a consistent schedule.

“Eventually, we’d like to get a trailer and make [the movement] mobile. We’d like to go to retirement homes or assisted living facilities, or even campuses during exam week,” says Nick.

With their team of 20 to 30 volunteers, Nick and Scott want to show Tallahassee that there is still good in the world. There are still people who want to help other people.

Generosity can often feel transactional. Free things usually come with expectations, whether it’s a donation or a sales pitch. The People’s Pancakes quietly pushes against that assumption.

The pancakes are the face, but the people of Tallahassee are the heart and soul.
