You’re strolling the streets of a charming downtown with a warm beverage in hand while Christmas carols swell in the air around you. Above the music you hear the distinct ringing of bells. Appearing before you is Santa himself with reindeer in tow. In that moment, brilliantly colored bulbs alight the streets all around you.

This may seem like a scene from a Hallmark movie, but every Thanksgiving night it becomes the reality of downtown Moultrie’s Canopy of Lights Event.

On Thursday, Nov. 23, the City of Moultrie invites locals and visitors alike to the regional event that welcomes the holiday season. The event, which dates back to the 1930s, began with four strands of lights hung from corner to corner atop of the courthouse. The event has now expanded to include over 9,000 lights cascading throughout downtown Moultrie.

“When the lights come on, it’s truly a magical thing, a sight to see,” said Amy Johnson, director of Downtown Economic Development.

The event commences at 6 p.m. with the arrival of Santa and his reindeer. Mr. Claus himself will greet the children and the reindeer will be on display for photo opportunities. The lights will then be turned on, transforming the downtown into a winter wonderland.

Youngsters can hop aboard the miniature Polar Express or saddle up for pony rides. Stilt walkers dressed as your favorite holiday characters will delight as they stop to pose for pictures.

Adults can indulge in a sip and stroll through downtown thanks to participating businesses and vendors.

A major aspect of this event is showcasing the shops and dining options of downtown which will open their doors at 4 p.m. for guests to shop, stroll and support local. Shop hop from store to store browsing the unique treasures only local stores specialize in. Many of the stores decorate for Christmas, have treats and special sales to mark the event.

“Shopping locally at our downtown stores provides special touches you don’t get at big box stores,” said Johnson. “At these stores, you get to meet the owners, have them make recommendations for anyone on your shopping list and then they can wrap the gifts.”

This Thanksgiving night is just the beginning of the holiday happenings downtown. Each night until Jan. 5, 2024, the lights will turn on and sparkle for shoppers and strollers, perfect for taking Christmas pictures. And on Dec. 14, the lights will dazzle attendees during the Moultrie Christmas Parade.
