When people have special problems involving their gums, they often require intensive treatment provided by a periodontist. Periodontics is the specialty that deals with the disease of the gums and the supportive tissues around the teeth. Dr. Aixa Guzmán has extensive training and knowledge which allows her to detect and treat all types of gum conditions.

Dr. Guzmán was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She graduated from the Medical Science Campus of the University of Puerto Rico as a Medical Technologist and worked for many years. She returned to the University School of Dentistry, studied during the day and continued working as a medical technologist at night until she finished her Doctorate in Dental Medicine in 1991.

Dr. Guzmán did a post-doctorate advanced education in general dentistry, and general practice residency at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Dr. Guzmán participated as an associate clinical professor at the undergraduate department during her residency and worked as a general dentist. Dr. Guzmán did her post-doctorate periodontal training at Temple University School of Dentistry, in Philadelphia. She was a clinical assistant professor at the AEGD department at Temple University School of Dentistry.

Dr. Guzmán relocated to Broward County Florida in 1996. She worked as a clinical professor at Broward Dental Research Clinic Hygiene Department and undergraduate department at Nova Southeastern University for several years and was in private practice in the Broward Miami-Dade County area until moving to Tallahassee.

Dr. Guzman is an active member of the Academy of Periodontology, International Congress of Oral Implantology, Academy of Osseointegration, and Advance General Dentistry.

Her diverse background and training enable her to help the community pursue long-term dental care. She brings her expertise to each patient through comprehensive, individualized diagnosis and treatment plans including the patient’s goals, needs, and risk tolerance.

She enjoys outdoor activities like bicycle riding, kayaking, and hiking.
