4. Honey Badger
Pet name (and nicknames): HoneyBadger (HB, Badge, Badgerator, Sir Stinkoweth, Lovebug)
Interesting story behind your pet’s name or nickname: After picking him up from the shelter 11 years ago, we needed a name for our creamy red dachshund with golden eyes. Contenders were Hyve, Badger, and Honey. After three days, we compromised: HoneyBadger
Pet’s date of birth: 9/26/2011
Pet’s gender: Male
Is your pet spayed or neutered: Yes
Pet’s breed: Standard smooth-haired dachshund
Physical description: Standard size, creamy red, golden eyes, diamond-shaped ruff
How long have you had your pet: 11 years
If adopted, how did you come to adopt your pet: We went to the shelter to pet dogs and had no intention of adopting. HoneyBadger toddled out after surgery and stole our hearts.
Favorite food/treats: He loves watermelon, plain Greek yogurt, carrots, and bacon
Tell us about your pet’s personality: He used to chase squirrels and anoles, but he’s more low-key these days. He is still curious, tracking in the yard, enjoying rides in the countryside, and especially napping with his human siblings.
What makes your pet happy: A r-i-d-e in the t-r-u-c-k, the occasional pup cup, and when the whole family is home.
What is unique about your pet: He doesn’t like to play with toys or fetch. He prefers people to toys and other dogs.
Please tell us about any of your pet’s unusual characteristics or special talents: HoneyBadger’s favorite trick is standing up on his back feet for a yummy treat. His main talent is giving puppy dog eyes to get belly rubs. His stomach knows exactly when breakfast and dinner are (even with the time change).
Please share a heartwarming story: A few months after HoneyBadger came home, the weather turned cold. We worried that his short fur wouldn’t keep him warm on walks, so we bought him a dapper knit sweater. After we put it on him, we noticed he hadn’t moved a muscle in 10 minutes. I called his name. He groaned in response but stayed frozen. I reached for the phone to call the vet, and Dad had an idea. “Pull that sweater off before you call.” I removed the sweater, and HoneyBadger stood up and shook his body, wagged his tail, and hopped off the couch to play. That’s how we learned he hates clothing.
What makes your pet special to you and your family: Although HoneyBadger’s dad grew up with dozens of dogs, HoneyBadger is his Mama’s first. We cannot remember life without him.
Why should your pet be Tally Top Pet: He is a Tallahassee lad who loves where he lives. He explores local parks and trails, loves a Leon County sunset, and would be a proud ambassador for our town.
