13. Gunther
Interesting story behind your pet’s name or nickname: Gunther originally came into our care with the name Sparky, but it just didn’t seem to suit him. Since we always allow our fosters to name their cats, his foster chose Gunther—a name she simply liked. Later, we discovered that Gunther is of German origin and means “battle warrior,” which feels fitting, given all he has overcome. With his new name, he embarked on a fresh start with us, proving that every cat deserves a second chance.

How long have you had your pet? Gunther has been in our rescue’s care since August 27, 2023.
If adopted, how did you come to adopt your pet: Gunther was rescued from a high-volume municipal shelter in 2023, where he and six other adult cats were at the top of the euthanasia list. Fortunately, our bookstore had space available, allowing us to save all seven cats at once. One by one, they found their forever homes—except for Gunther. Due to his arthritis and the need for monthly injections, Gunther is considered a special needs cat. While he’s still waiting for his perfect match, he has a safe and loving home with us for as long as he needs. Until then, he remains the grumpy-but-lovable king of Fat Cat Books, patiently holding out for the person who will see him for the special cat he truly is.
Favorite food/treats: Gunther is a total sucker for wet food; he doesn’t discriminate, he just loves it. The moment he hears the clink of a can, he comes running. It is one of the few things that can break through his grumpy exterior and bring out his excited side.
Tell us about your pet’s personality: Gunther is the definition of a grumpy old man—the kind who yells at people for stepping on his lawn but secretly just wants a friend to talk to. He may act tough, with his serious expression and independent streak, but deep down, he’s got a soft side. Gunther was rescued from the euthanasia list and has been through a lot, so he tends to be a little skeptical of new people. He’s not the type to shower you with affection right away, but he will stare at you from across the room, judging your every move. Despite his grumbles, he’s impossible not to love. He’s won over countless bookstore visitors and is an employee favorite too. At the end of the day, Gunther just wants what we all do—a little respect, some good food, and a warm place to call home. Until he finds his perfect person, he’s more than happy ruling over Fat Cat Books, keeping everyone on their toes.
What makes your pet happy: Gunther may have his grumpy exterior, but he still enjoys life. He has a surprisingly photogenic side and loves posing for pictures, as if he knows he is the star of the show. You can often find him perched on the top of the bookshelves or front counter like a gargoyle, watching over the bookstore. He also loves curling up into a little ball in our cat beds at nap time. It’s simple things that make Gunther happy!
What is unique about your pet: Gunther is a textbook example of learning to stay gentle in a harsh world. He’s like sourdough bread—tough on the outside but soft on the inside. Coming from a rough past, he is naturally wary of most people, but with those he trusts, he shows his sweeter side. Trauma often builds walls, making it hard to let others in. But with the right support system and enough patience, those walls can come down. Gunther is proof of that. Every day, he learns that people are not out to get him, that kindness exists, and that he doesn’t have to be tough all the time. Watching him slowly open up is what makes him truly special.
Please tell us about any of your pet’s unusual characteristics or special talents: Gunther is full of quirks that make him one of a kind. He’s incredibly opinionated and isn’t afraid to let you know exactly how he feels. His voice is strong, dramatic, and unmistakable. If he had a career, we’re pretty sure he’d be an opera singer, filling the bookstore with his powerful vocals. Beneath his tough demeanor, he’s a cat with a big personality and even bigger presence.
Please share a heartwarming story: One of the most heartwarming moments with Gunther happened recently when a little girl visited Fat Cat Books. She immediately fell in love with Gunther and his grumpy demeanor. She could tell that he was a little different and wanted to make him feel special. So, she decided to make him a toy—a handmade gift just for him. She returned to the bookstore and gave it to Gunther in person. Gunther, usually a little skeptical, received her gesture with a kind of quiet acceptance. We couldn’t help but think maybe he was a little touched by her kindness too. It was a reminder to us that even cats that are sometimes misunderstood, like Gunther, can find moments of connection when given the opportunity.
What makes your pet special to you or your family: Gunther is the epitome of why our rescue does what it does. He came from a tough situation, facing euthanasia and a life filled with uncertainty. But through our rescue, he was given a second chance. He found a safe haven at Fat Cat Books, where we work with him patiently, helping him learn to trust people again. What makes him truly special to us is the commitment we have made to him. We’ve provided him a safe home at our bookstore, where he can stay as long as it takes to find the perfect family. He’s a reminder that rescue isn’t always about finding quick placements, sometimes rescue is about offering a space for healing, working through the tough moments, and letting a pet truly blossom when they are ready.
Why should your pet be Tally Top Pet: Gunther deserves to be crowned Tally Top Pet because he represents so many of the things rescue stands for: second chances, resilience, and the power of patience. He came from a difficult past, was given a safe haven, and continues to show us the importance of working with special needs pets, even when they’re not the easiest. His unique personality, from his strong opinions to his quiet moments of trust, makes him an unforgettable cat. Despite his gruff exterior, Gunther has a heart full of potential, and he’s learning to trust again, one step at a time. His journey is the perfect example of why we do what we do, because every pet, no matter how challenging, deserves the chance to shine. Gunther is a fighter, and his story deserves to be celebrated.
