In 2022, a group of enthusiastic tennis supporters came together for a fundraising dinner/dance that would net $53,943 in scholarship and performance funds for the FSU women’s tennis program.

Having aced the event last year, a committee co-chaired by Sharon Fallon and Dent Ward is doing it again in 2023. Night at the Net: An Evening of Dinner and Dancing will take place on Thursday, March 2, from 7-10 p.m. at Shiloh Farm, 1500 Benjamin Chaires Road. Tables for eight go for $1,000; individual tickets are $150 and VIP sponsorships are available.

And dress? Cocktail attire with tennis shoes is strongly encouraged. Last year, a couple of women snuck in wearing wedges or heels, but most complied. Gold-ribbon shoe laces proved to be a popular touch.

“We invite everyone to join us and kick up their sneakers in support of our nationally recognized women’s tennis program,” said Susan Ragsdale, the publicity chair for Night at the Net.

WTXL ABC 27 sports director Alison Posey will serve as master of ceremonies. The Groove Merchants will supply dance music, and Social Catering will serve up the food. The top bidder in a live auction will will a trip to  Hawaii with the women’s tennis team.

Raffle items will include a guided fishing trip for tripletail with Williamson Outfitters of Eastpoint; a basket of wine and liquors selected by the Night at the Net committee; and a painting by noted abstractionist Dan Taylor. Attendees will receive a free raffle ticket for every pair of new or lightly used athletic shoes they contribute to the nonprofit Soles 4 Souls, an event partner.

A separate event, Day at the Net, gives participants a chance to practice and complete drills with the FSU women’s  tennis team. It is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the FSU Indoor Tennis Courts, 2566 Pottsdamer St. Tickets are $100.
