The First Amendment Foundation (FAF) will honor Lucy Morgan and announce the creation of the Lucy Morgan Award for Open Government Reporting at a cocktail reception November 15 in Tallahassee featuring keynote speaker Gilbert King. The fundraiser will benefit the work of FAF.
Just this year, Florida legislators issued a formal apology to family members of the Groveland Four, the four men chronicled in King's Pulitzer Prize winning book, 'Devil in the Grove' who were falsely accused of raping a white woman in 1949. 'Devil in the Grove' has garnered much praise for the attention brought to the case in recent years. A New York Times bestseller, the book was also named runner up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for non-fiction and was nominated for an Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime. King will also talk about his new book, 'Beneath a Ruthless Sun,' which comes out in April.
Copies of 'Devil in the Grove' will be available for sale at the event. A book signing follows the keynote speech.
